Oh my god, I loved this book so much. So. Much. It was such a breath of fresh air. I’ve read hundreds of lesbian romance books over the past 12 months, ever since COVID hit and ran the world to ground. Many of them follow a tried and true formula that can be fun and satisfying, but not necessarily original. I absolutely love books like this, that read like an interesting story with a romance as a central element, but not the central plot.“The Clinch” is, at its heart, two things: an immersive descent into the world of mixed martial arts; and a coming out tale. Regarding the former, I admittedly know little about MMA, although I’ve always found it intriguing in a peripheral kind of way. The way Nicole Disney builds the world of MMA as a competitive sport that people live, breathe, and code their lives by, is truly fascinating. My heart was POUNDING during several of the fight scenes. The descriptions are so well done, you both feel like you’re standing among the crowd of roaring fans whilst simultaneously being in the fighters’ heads. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything like it as a reader.As for the coming out portion, I almost don’t like to summarize it so breezily. “Coming out” is never really something you only do once; queer people do it all the time, all their lives, to all sorts of people. But in this instance it feels appropriate, because the character in question is both that deep in the closet, and so well known in her world that being out would mean being OUT. Watching her struggle between where her loyalties lie and where her heart lies is so heartbreaking. In the end, as much as I loved the two MC’s together (and I did!!), I overwhelmingly wanted the character to be true to herself for her *own* sake; not for the sake of the romance. That is a “coming out tale” done right. You do it for yourself, to live your life as who you truly are, with the partner of your choosing. Thank you, Nichole Disney, for getting it right.Lastly, the characters are wonderful. They’re compelling and well drawn, and there wasn’t a single relationship dynamic that didn’t have a purpose or that read as boring. Brooklyn and Eden’s romance is special - organic, complicated, and sexy. They’re two well matched alphas who make for an exciting pair to watch. And I genuinely enjoy them as individuals. In particular, Eden the champion badass with a heart of gold.5/5 stars! Fantastic read. This book was perfect, the writing was phenomenal, the characters felt real, and all of the conflict felt incredibly realistic. Nicole did a wonderful job with bringing all of the characters to life and really made me feel like Eden and Brooklyn are real people! The fight descriptions were so rich that it felt like I was there in the stadium watching. I love sports based romances and this book blew all the ones I've read out of the water. I would love to see this book retold from Brooklyn's POV or have a second book where we continue to follow Eden and Brooklyn because I was not ready to leave them! This has easily become a book I will come back to when I need a comfort read.
